What Skills Does DBT Teach?
Mindfullness
Learn how to stay present in the moment without judgment. Mindfulness helps you feel more connected to yourself and your experiences rather than reacting out of habit or panic.
Distress Tolerance
These skills help you cope during emotional crises—without making things worse. Instead of shutting down or acting impulsively, you’ll build tools to ride out difficult moments safely, and without making things worse.
Emotion Regulation
Understand your emotions, reduce emotional overwhelm, and respond more skillfully. These tools help you recognize patterns and shift your emotional responses over time.
Interpersonal Effectiveness
Strengthen your communication skills, set boundaries, and ask for what you need—without sacrificing relationships or your self-respect.
Understanding the “Dialectical” in DBT
“Dialectical” simply means holding two truths at once.
In DBT, it means learning how to:
- Accept your current reality
- While also working toward meaningful change.
You’ll learn how to balance your emotional mind and logical mind so they can work together to guide your choices, instead of pulling you in opposite directions.
